A scoreless first half saw both teams with chances, but things got going early in the second half. Antoine Griezmann was taken down in the box, and the video assistant referee team was used to help the head official overturn a penalty kick call. It’s the first-ever use of VAR at a World Cup game. History was made and Griezmann soon after converted the spot kick to give the French team an early lead in the 58th minute.
Griezmann did score from the penalty spot, but he looked a shadow of the player who scored seven times and provided two assists in his past two major tournaments.
But just moments later, Australia was awarded a penalty of its own thanks to a bonehead handball by Samuel Umtiti. Mile Jedinak hit back with a penalty to make scores level at 62′ minute.
Game soon began so crunchy and both teams struggled hard for getting a lead. But with Huddersfield’s Mooy marshalling midfield alongside Jedinak, Australia were showing more compact and well organised.
The luck favours France again at 80th minute. France retook the lead with another dash of theatrical flourish. The build up was born of beautifully deft, quick passing. Paul Pogba was at the heart of it, exchanging moves with Mbappé and Olivier Giroud before his shot nicked off Aziz Behich and looped over Ryan, against the crossbar, and in. Not in by much, mind, but enough for the goalline technology buzzer to inform Cunha to award the goal.
“Paul Pogba gave a good performance today. He is a great player with great potential and has got what it takes. I think he felt more comfortable in the way we played today with three midfielders. He has the freedom to do mor for the offense as when we play only with two midfielders.” – Didier Deschamps, France coach
