Korea Republic’s poor run continues
Creating goalscoring chances had been the main concerns surrounding the Swedish team ahead of this game. Carving out opportunities would not prove to be the problem, as the players were clearly eager to prove their critics wrong, but the ball did not want to go in, and in the end it took a penalty kick to secure the three points. A strong start for Sweden showed that they prepared well for their return to the global stage.

Andreas Granqvist scored a 65th-minute penalty awarded by the video assistant referee (VAR) . “In the second half we made some adjustments to concentrate on our speed and managed to find opportunities, but Sweden played really well. Among the 32 teams at this World Cup, Sweden are one of the tallest. They are able to take advantage of this and their physical condition. We really wanted to win this match. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t win today, but now our attitude is that we have to prepare ourselves very well for the match against Mexico. They are going to be a formidable oponent. We have to find our own way to face them.”
– Shin Taeyong, Korea Republic Head Coach
South Korea, competing in their ninth successive World Cup, were disappointing and the closest they came to scoring was when Hwang Hee-chan headed wastefully wide in the closing moments.
