Google has just launched its new subscription service for the highly popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, named Bard. This service seeks to merge the vast amount of knowledge from the web with the power and intelligence of Google’s large language models. According to CEO Sundar Pichai, “ChatGPT uses information from the web to provide fresh and high-quality responses.”

The immense attention garnered by ChatGPT has resulted in Google declaring a “code red” situation for its search business. Microsoft has confirmed plans to invest in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and has already stated that it will incorporate the tool into some of its products, including its search engine Bing.
The technology behind Bard, known as Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), has been in existence for some time. Last year, a former Google engineer claimed that the chatbot was “sentient,” however, these claims were widely criticized in the AI community.
Google provided an example of how Bard can be used to provide conversational responses. If a user were to ask Bard to explain new discoveries made by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope in a way that a 9-year-old would understand, Bard would respond with bullet points. “In 2023, The JWST spotted a number of galaxies nicknamed ‘green peas.’ They were given this name because they are small, round, and green, like peas,” stated Google in a recent post.
In addition to providing scientific explanations, Bard can also be utilized for planning a friend’s baby shower, comparing Oscar-nominated movies, or suggesting lunch ideas based on the contents of one’s fridge. “Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distill complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web,” said Google.
While incorporating an AI chatbot tool into search could come with certain risks, such as perpetuating biases and spreading misinformation, Google believes it is crucial to “bring experiences rooted in these models to the world in a bold and responsible way.”
As ChatGPT creator launches subscription service for viral AI chatbot, this new service is poised to revolutionize the way people access and interact with information. With ChatGPT’s vast database of knowledge and its AI-powered ability to respond in a conversational manner, Bard’s entry will poised to be a game-changer in the tech industry.
