Wiki Leaks says the CIA can spy on persons through their internet-connected television. This means government spies could know a lot more about you. Mainly the reports mention about SAMSUNG TV’s which is more hacked by CIA.
Wiki Leaks released a huge number of documents describing what it calls secret spying and hacking tools developed by the CIA and British intelligence. The website claims the CIA Center for Cyber Intelligence “lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal,” more than several hundred million lines of code that provide “the entire hacking capacity of the CIA.”
FAKE off mode is what makes the television appear to be off but keeps the power running so spies can capture audio and possibly video of anything in the room
The mode of operation will be include a Fake Off mode inserted into Samsung televisions. If activated, it makes the television appear to be off but keeps the power running so spies can capture audio and possibly video of anything in the room. Samsung has not yet responded to this news.
Jake Williams, a security expert with the Georgia-based security firm Rendition Infosec, said the information will be used within days or weeks by hackers and the security firms that combat them.
“My first thought was ‘Wow!’ quickly followed by the realization that this is a treasure trove of information,” he said. “We are regularly dealing with corporations being attacked by nation-state hacking groups. This gives us a lot of insight into how they do it.”
The hack is wildly known as Weeping Angel applies only to Samsung televisions from 2012 and 2013 that feature outdated firmware versions 1111, 1112, and 1116.
Which TVs are being hacked by CIA?
Rumor says, primarily it is SAMSUNG TV’s. Samsung TV’s released between 2012 or 2013, check to see if it got one of the following models.
1. From 2012: UNES8000F, E8000GF plasma, and UNES7550F.
2. From 2013: F8500 plasma, UNF8000 series, UNF7500 series, and UNF7000 series.
To determine your firmware version and to update it, go to the main menu, select Support, then select Software Update.
It is also possible the CIA has updated Fake Off mode to address the telltale LED. May be after this incident has been noted, it is also possible that Samsung changed the LED on subsequent models. But SAMSUNG acknowledged in 2015 that hackers could compromise the voice-control feature in some sets, and they are looking into fix the problem.
It is funny but truth is that the effective protection of TV’s from unscrupulous companies, hackers, and government spies is to simply disconnect the TV from the internet. On the contradictory, if you do not connect your TV to internet, then why you buying a Smart TV.
However, just give a smile to your home SMART TV next time, let the person on the other side get a SMILE !!!!!
