Moon is 10th Planet in the Solar System ?

Lunar_eclipse_October_8_2014_California_Alfredo_Garcia_Jr_mideclipseYes. We shortly have to believe this as a new fact as per new directions happening in the solar world. NASA scientists have proposed a new definition of Planets, and Pluto also could soon be back as 9th planet.

According to leading scientists at NASA, our ‘moon’ could be among more than 100 planets added to the solar system. Main other ‘moon’s along with Earth’s Moon will be Titan and Enceladus, which orbit Saturn and Europa, and Ganymede, which orbits Jupiter.

Currently the main definition of considering a world as planet is that it should orbit around it is parent Sun. But now One of the key changes is that worlds no longer need to be orbiting the sun to be considered planets. Alan Stern, principle investigator of Nasa’s New Horizons mission to Pluto, along with five colleagues, has written a manifesto rewriting the definition of what constitutes being a planet.

Alan Stern and his team already put forwarded the proposal to the IAU. If the proposals are accepted by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the current eight-planet solar system could see more than 100 added to it.

“In the mind of the public, the word ‘planet’ carries a significance lacking in other words used to describe planetary bodies… many members of the public assume that alleged ‘non-planets’ cease to be interesting enough to warrant scientific exploration,” the team wrote in their manifesto.

For the past few years this idea was rumoured among most of the leading astronatuers as degradation of Pluto from planet to dwarf star was not accepted by all the astronatuers in the world. Pluto was famously ‘demoted’ to dwarf planet status back in August 2006, when astronomer Mike Brown from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) proposed a rewrite of the definition of planets.

Hence this news comes after astronomers have discovered more than 100 new planets including one which is thought to be a “super-earth” – a planet able to support life.A total of 114 new planets have been found, more than half of which are situated in our immediate solar neighbourhood.

The so-called “super-earth” is in the fourth-closest star system to our sun and has been named Gilese 411b.

The current definition of a celestial body considered to be planet if and only if ,

  • It reached a hydro static balance without starting a thermonuclear fusion.
  • It turns around the Sun describing an orbit.
  • It “cleared” its close neighborhood.

The new (proposed) definition of a celestial body considered to be planet if,

  • It reached a hydro static balance without starting a thermonuclear fusion.
  • It turns around the Sun describing an orbit.
  • It “cleared” its close neighborhood.
  • And some other newly proposed definitions which still has not clearly revealed by NASA.

Of course, nothing changes until the IAU makes a decision, and if it decides to change the definition of a planet, either by these recommendations or others in the future, it’s going to take a whole lot of deliberating before it becomes official.
